How to Organize a Garage / Storage Area

Happy Day before Thanksgiving! I want to first off thank those of you who have already filled out my Reader Survey, I LOVE hearing from you. If you have not yet filled it out, and want to win a little Christmas Cash to Target, jump right over HERE and tell me what’s on your mind! Big thanks!!!

Now, this month on the Home Tour I’m coordinating this post as a slash organizing slash storage slash garage reveal. While not the most exciting part of our home (or decorated) it IS a functional space and now MUCH more organized. (Thanks to my hours of sweat and tears!)

Are you ready???

What’s behind these curtains you ask??? Well…this would be our “garage/storage” area! (It looks much better with the curtains shut!) A whole lot of randomness crammed into this unique storage space. (To the left of this room is our Kid’s Veg Space.)

BEFORE

This room is actually a converted garage space and this storage area runs the full side of the enclosed garage. The remainder of this room is used for our workout space and for my yoga classes.

The storage area had been organized at one time or another, but with five different people digging into the storage area for things like golf clubs, suit cases or cat carriers, it had begun to look like this… can we say “CATCH ALL”?

With the need to dig out our Christmas decorations soon, I knew this was the perfect time to do a once over on this area. So I pulled everything out and redesigned the space into “zones”.

That was our biggest problem before, things were sort of just put away wherever.

After pulling everything out, I was able to get rid of several items that needed to be discarded. Then I took all of the things that needed to be stored and I organized them into three different zones. Here is what it looked like when I was done.

Three Zones

Zone 1 – Camping, sports and seasonal decor. (Items accessed often.)

Zone 2 – Luggage, spare bed, table and shop vac. (Items accessed less often.)

Zone 3 – Moving boxes, US lamps/appliances and items that belong to the house we are renting. (Items accessed rarely, if ever.)

Organized Zones

Then on my new “To Do” is to find a better system for our Christmas Tree. This box just isn’t cutting it! I left a space for the tree to be stored in Zone #1. Off to Amazon to find a great solution for this storage dilemma!

Garage & Storage Organization Tips:

  • Create Zones: place like items together and put items that are used more often in an easier place to access and the items that are used less often in harder to reach places.
  • Less IS More: don’t just toss stuff into your garage/storage area, just because you can. Use the space for items that you actually need to keep and hold on to.
  • Put Things Away: commit to putting things back to where they belong and work to keep the order in place.

Tell Me: Is your garage / storage area in a good {organizational} place? Why or why not?
