How to Organize your Garage

This month, for the “Clear the Clutter Challenge,” we’re addressing garage organization. Which feels like perfect timing, especially now that spring here! Previously, I’ve shown you our garage in our Mountain House and how we created functional storage. Be sure to check it out! Next month we’re going to change things up a bit and tackle how to pack and organize for travel, which will tie in well with summer time!

How to Organize your Garage

In working with my clients, I see firsthand how garage organization can be complicated. It is often the “room” that is the most neglected and becomes the catch-all space. To help to keep things simple and uncomplicated, try following these three rules when it comes to clearing the clutter in your garage (or basement or storage room).

As a reminder, this challenge is a great way to work on your decluttering. There is also a link up, so if you want to join the fun, link up below or join us on our Facebook group, by clicking here. Accountability can be a great motivator! In fact, it’s often the difference between whether or not you get something done. This is true, even for me. 🙂

 How to Organize your Garage
First, things first. Like I always say….less is more. Don’t look at your garage as some gigantic storage unit. Look at it as another room in your home that needs a defined purpose. Declutter and only keep those things you really need to keep! If you haven’t used something in a year (or two or three) chances are you probably don’t really need it! After you declutter and have the essentials you need to store, follow these three rules to help maximize your space and minimize your stress!

Rule #1: Use your vertical space.
Go tall and wide, use your walls. Get creative! This if often the most under utilized space and can make all the difference between an organized and an unorganized garage.

Rule #2: Use “matching” and “stacking” containers.
When you use the same color and style of containers it makes it easier to stack them and it looks more streamlined (or shall I say – organized). Whether you use clear or colored bins is up to you, they both have their advantages. And then, label if and where you need to.

Rule #3: Use your ceiling.
Like your walls, your ceiling can be a great option for storing your “stuff,” especially anything that you don’t use as often. Here is a great DIY way to add overhead storage.

Or, you could use an overhead system like Monkey Bar Storage. Garages often have tall ceilings can provide you with a great place to store things.
