Organizing Kids’ Rooms

Are ready to learn how organizing kids’ rooms is both possible and doable?

September is my month to do one of my favorite things ever – purge (yes I probably could use some more hobbies).  I started my room by room purge on Monday (Labor Day), I am going to work hard, and I am hoping to have my entire home done in two weeks. How do I tackle purging?  I shared all about it over here friends!

Bedroom #1

Ainsley and I worked for about two hours purging and cleaning her room. (I love having her help me because she is happy to get rid of things, a girl after my own heart.) She was a big help and I think we made a lot of progress! We didn’t need to do a BEFORE picture, because she really does keep her room pretty clean, so there would not have been much of a comparison to show. Check out her pink preteen pad…all ready for fall!

Her “Big Girl Bed”, this is also a slash / Guest Bedroom, since she can go in and bunk with Berkley when we have visitors.  (We got her a Queen mattress set with an Ikea bed frame.)  Ikea bedding as well, thanks to Sarah for her suggestion.  I think this helps give her room a more grown up feel.
I put hooks up for each of my kids to place all of their sweatshirts and light coats on.  This also provides a place for purses, scarves, backpacks etc.  I place them behind the door so as to not take up decorating space and to sort of keep them out of sight.  I love her sweet growth chart, thanks Julie!
Her desk holds her hair accessories, some school supplies and her doll clothes.  I plan to add a lamp on her desk and a few other accessories.  Note the garbage can underneath her desk.
Right side of closet, I LOVE the built in system, they give so much storage.  Since Ainsley does her own laundry now, she keeps a basket in her closet to hold her dirty clothes.  She does not have a dresser so all of her clothing is in her closet. The baskets on the shelves hold all of her items that are not hung up.
Left side of closet, yes that is an overhead projector.  She wants to be a 2nd grade teacher, and I want to be one of her students!  Since she is a preteen, there are not many toys at this stage, she mostly has school supplies for playing school.  The cute cart holds a variety of teaching supplies and wheels out for any instructing needs that may come up. 🙂
New to us bookshelf (I just bought from my neighbor).  Ainsley loves to read and had fun putting all her favorites in one place.  I also suggest putting shelves in kids bedrooms for places to display items, trophies, pictures etc.
Bulletin boards of any kind are a great place for kids to put their personal items, favorite picture, birthday thank you card, invitations, memories etc.  During a purge make sure to clean this up and put anything into your memory place that they truly want to save.

Ainsley told me before we started that she didn’t have any clothes to get rid of….well…a full garbage sack later proved wrong.  We also hauled out a small bag of trash, then we finished by cleaning the windows and shutters, vacuuming, and wiping down the baseboards.

Simple Tips: Organizing Kids’ Bedrooms

  • Put up hooks at their level to hang up clothing, bags, hats etc.
  • Place a small garbage can in their room
  • Hang up shelves, high, for those special display items
  • Utilize a bulletin or photo board for their personal cards and pictures
  • Use bins, baskets, or buckets to hold like item toys together, label with words and/or pictures
  • Large baskets are great for holding lots of stuffed animals
  • Dressers are excellent places to store toys by like categories
  • Have them help you purge, IF they are willing to purge along with you

*Tip – Purge your children’s bedrooms three times a year to keep on top of the “stuff.”
