Organizing Playrooms

Here is part two of organizing playrooms (aka bedrooms that also need to have all.the.toys.) I am working through my September purge. You can read about my purging passion over here, and hopefully get motivated to start doing some purging yourself! If you didn’t read the first post in this series of two you can read it HERE.

Bedroom #2

I was very  motivated to get to purging, cleaning, and organizing Berkley’s room. As you will note from the utter disaster below. Please note, she is creative, she is full of life, she is fun and she loves to PLAY! Her room, looks like this A LOT. I try and I try, but because we don’t have a playroom and this is where all of her toys are, this is what happens. I frankly don’t care. (This is not true, but I really try not to. I try to remember she will be asking to borrow the car keys before I know it…)

In fact, she now has a mouse in there (a pet) and I prefer to keep the door shut because of the smell. Which also helps me to. forget what it looks like when the door is closed ha! My desire is to continue to help her maintain her room better. Berkley does do a great job of cleaning up, when instructed, but that same energy she uses to clean is used when she plays!

BEFORE PICTURE

This is how it looks more often than not.
Stuff, and more stuff.

AFTER PICTURE

Her desk holds toys in the bottom two baskets and small trinkets in the top basket.  “Ivy” lives on top of the desk because when we had her on top of the dresser the cat knocked it off at three in the morning…that was a fun night, everyone did survive, me included.  Garbage can is to the left and she hangs all of her necklaces and bracelets on the flower hooks.  I also have plans to paint the chair yellow to match her other accessories.
The baskets on top hold hair accessories and lotions – things I don’t want her getting into on her own, shhh…
The dresser holds all of her folded clothing.
In addition I use three of the bottom drawers for extra toy storage.
Dolls go here…
 Doll clothes here…
Kitchen dishes and play food here…
Book storage and CD player tucked away in here…
This is her reading corner with an Ikea light above.
Ikea magnetic boards used for all of her memories she wants to display.
Both beds have their own reading lamps, I had my hubby run a small board from the floor to the ceiling to hold both lamps.
Easy way to give each bed their own light.
This corner is her play corner.
The basket holds all of her stuffed animals.
Left side of closet, clothes and toy storage.
Right side of closet, clothes, books, and toys.  Each bin is labeled and they hold their own theme, “My Little Pony”, “Barbie” etc….in theory this should make for easy clean up!  The top two shelves, I had a hard time getting a picture due to the large leaf hanging over my head, but I use these to store toys that have a lot of parts, puzzles etc.  Things that I want to be aware of when she wants to get them out, since she will have to ask me to get them down for her.
A large row of hooks behind the door, provide plenty of space for her sweatshirts, bags and hats.

Simple Tips: Organizing Kids’ Bedrooms

  • Put up hooks at their level to hang up clothing, bags, hats etc.
  • Place a small garbage can in their room
  • Hang up shelves, high, for those special display items
  • Utilize a bulletin or photo board for their personal cards and pictures
  • Use bins, baskets, or buckets to hold like item toys together, label with words and/or pictures
  • Large baskets are great for holding lots of stuffed animals
  • Dressers are excellent places to store toys by like categories
  • Have them help you purge, IF they are willing to purge along with you

Berkley was excited that I was going to tackle her room, she does like it clean, but I think she just likes to play MORE than she likes it clean!  I went to work on my own, knowing that it would be smoother for me to just go at it solo.  She was busy playing with her brother so it worked out fine.  I hauled out one garbage sack of garbage (a broken jewelry box, old papers, broken toys etc.) and added a few more items to my Goodwill pile.  In the two hours I spent I was also able to clean the windows and shutters, vacuum, and wipe down the baseboards.

*Tip – Purge your children’s bedrooms three times a year to keep on top of the “stuff.”
