Homeschooling – Part Two

There are so many reasons I absolutely LOVE homeschooling.  I am here to share my top 10!

I want to clarify, that I don’t think you should want to homeschool at all, but I hope you will better understand perhaps why I have enjoyed it in so many ways.  It has been a tremendous blessing to us during this season.  I shared more about our background with homeschooling here.

Reason #1 – We can take a VACATION whenever we want!  Well…we are not limited to a school calendar…

Disneyland – January 2012

Reason #2 – We can be CREATIVE and let our kids do crazy things.
This would be Connor…I had asked him to keep it on the place mat…oh well…

My kids spend so much of their free time playing together creatively, practicing the piano and doing art.  They also seem relaxed and care free, just how kids should be.

Reason #3 – We have peaceful afternoons because of NO HOMEWORK, which allows for more afternoon and evening activities.

Reason #4 – As a family we have grown CLOSER, with more time together we have made many more memories.

Reason #5 – We have MORE TIME to teach life skills like cooking and cleaning.

Reason #6 – We have realized that LEARNING happens everywhere!

Reason #7 – We have taken advantage of all the FUN ACTIVITIES that our city has to offer.
We have gone bowling, served at the Food Bank, walked through the Zoo, sang at a Nursing Home, checked out the State Capital, jumped at a bunch of different play places, toured an Elk Farm, visited the Children’s Museum, played at many parks, had fun at Oaks Amusement Park, discovered quirky eateries around Portland, went to a farm at the end of the Oregon Trail, and of course took our annual trip to the pumpkin patch.

We are a part of two Co-ops, so sometimes we join in with planned activities, and other times we just do what we want to do.

Reason #8 – When daddy has to TRAVEL we are able to join him.  Instant major Field Trip!
June 2011 – Trip to Boise, Idaho
Reason #9 – TIME – there is just more time to go around, I know my kids better.  I know how they learn, I understand more about what they need from me and I just love being with them!

Reason #10 – Mornings are much more MELLOW.

There is no rushing out the door for school…I do not miss that rushed feeling we used to have most mornings…

Of course that is not the full story…stay tuned for when I share the reasons I don’t love homeschooling.  Every choice we make has pluses and minuses, no exception here.

I firmly believe that any parent who is involved in their children’s life is homeschooling them in many ways.  Even if they attend school you as a parent are most likely spending more hours with your children each day.  So, I encourage you to make the most of the time you have, to be a model, teacher, and example always.
